Home is wonderful, but I know I will miss the adventure of each day on the road. I loved not knowing what each day would bring. I loved stopping on the side of the road and eating PB&J. I loved feeling exhausted after biking for hours. I loved seeing the tremendous beauty and diversity of our wonderful country. I loved spending the days with Jack and depending on him for so much of the trip. I loved meeting so many kind, friendly, and generous new friends. I loved running into libraries to update our blog. I loved morning sunrises and the whispers of the new day, I loved the peacefulness of biking in remote areas where hardly a car ever passed, I loved sipping coffee in all the wonderful small towns. I loved the serenity rendered by incredible sun sets, I loved eating yummy ice-cream everyday–sometimes twice! Throughout our trip, I felt brave, strong, and young – it was wonderful!
Awesome day! Jack and I headed for the very familiar North Central Rail Trail near our home in Pennsylvania! We love this trail and have ridden it many many times. Couldn't have gotten a better gift than my two dear friends, Kathy and Yvonne waiting to ride the trail with us ---- missed them so so so so so much!!!

Yvonne brought PB&J on homemade bread and Kathy brought M&M'S and almonds -- all my favorite biking food :-)

Needed to replace my rear tire! Totally worn through with the threads popping out, I was riding on the tube! Incredible that I did not get a flat with all the trail riding this past week!

Continually, friends old and new have made our trip across the US a totally amazing experience. Staying with family tonight where we are treated like royalty! Awesome steak dinner, some laughs, and the comfort of family and friends provided the perfect day as our journey is in the home stretch!
OMG! Can hardly sleep anymore - getting so excited to get home!!

Beautiful day cycling again on the C&O trail. Debated if we should take the trail all the way to Washington, DC, but we don't have a way to cross the Bay Bridge as bikes are not allowed. Mid-day, after leaving the trail we crossed back into Pennsylvania and then back again into Maryland. Our legs screamed as we encountered some large hills after riding the flat trails for almost 4 days.

Everything is so familiar now....familiar roads and highways, places, grocery store names, gas stations......Now Dunkin' Donuts is again
"King" (in the West it's all about Starbucks). Saw our first Ritas Ice....of course we had to get some!

Wonderful surprise this morning--our dear neighbors, Bonnie and Steve, drove down from Lancaster, after getting up at 3am, and met us at our hotel in Cumberland! After breakfast and some catching up they rode with us several hours as we set out on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail. Normally, the C&O is bumpy but after a rain storm, it is really crazy. Slipping and sliding in the mud and water puddles, we loved their company.
Met up with another group of 6 riders on the trail-- they were from Lancaster County, PA!!!

Riding the C&O is like taking a ride through transportation history. You can sense how at one time the canal was a lifeline for the communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway. The canal runs 184 miles from the mountains of Western, MD where we picked it up and it goes all the way to the tidal basin in Washington, DC.

Deer ran across our path and families of turkeys gobbled along side the trail. About 1/2 way through our ride we reached the Paw Paw Tunnel. As we walked our bikes slowly through this spooky, creepy 3,000 foot long tunnel, water dripped on us and we stepped in puddles! Not sure why we didn't use our flashlights!

Tired from the rough ride we were happy to reach Hancock! Getting so close!!!!
What a storm last night! I finally had to brave the rain to get to the shower house and bathroom. Slipped in the mud after showering :-) We woke starved so headed straight for town. Ordered the Friday special for breakfast - french toast, eggs, wheat toast, home fries and bacon! Then I got desert -- a turtle (morning desert :-) The turtle was a circle of dark chocolate with a layer of caramel, topped with a layer of cashews and then another layer of dark chocolate. I really hope I can stop eating like this when I get back home!
The rain continued through the morning and our bikes, bags, and bodies were covered with dirt kicked up from our tires on a very wet trail. Branches and downed large trees covered the trail making it a very slow ride. But by the afternoon, blue sky began to give way, and we stopped in Rockwood for a treat As we road off the trail, I described in detail to Jack the baked goods that I had gotten 4 years ago at the coffee house we were headed to (second desert of the day). Amazing the things I can remember!!

Making our way through the rugged mountainous terrain of the Allegheny Highlands, we pedaled across numerous bridges, the 1,908 foot long Salisbury Viaduct, and the monstrous Big Savage tunnel. This trail is such a jewel - for sure, one of my favorite places!

After reaching the highest point on the GAP trail at 2,392 feet, it was downhill for a 20 mile joy ride into Cumberland, Maryland. We reached Cumberland just in time for the Friday night street party! Five bands, restaurants with outdoor seating, dancing, and fun filled the downtown area. Ice cream (3rd desert) topped off our evening!
Great Allegheny Passage how I have missed you!! So many memories as I pedaled on the GAP trail today! I love this trail, and believe it to be one of the most beautiful bicycle trails in America. The trail travels through the Allegheny Mountains, along the Youghiogheny River, through two gorges, and has monumental bridges, tunnels, and viaducts. It's mostly flat, with a smooth surface -- truly a gem.

In the morning I rode with John. We saw many deer. We met up with Jack in Perryopolis for lunch. Then we emptied our bags again and sent home a set of pannier bags and all of our belongings except for 2 changes of clothing. We said good-bye to John till we see him at the beach next week!
Jack zoomed ahead on the trail. I wanted to enjoy every moment so I pedaled to my music and thoughts. Huge trees formed a welcome canopy of shade. Water trickled down the mountain side on my right and the clear Yough River babbled along on my left. It was so peaceful!

Once in Ohiopyle, we decided to try the State Park for lodging. To get there meant hiking with our bikes up a steep, gravel path about a mile, but we like to hike-n-bike! We wanted a cabin, but had to settle for a platform tent. While at the ranger station, the heavens began to rumble and lightning and thunder filled the sky. The ranger started telling me to seek shelter in the shower house if I didn't feel safe! I thought it was funny until the wind roared and the rain pounded on our canvas topped home! The storm never let up so we never got out for dinner, showers, the bathroom, or water! A bit scared but otherwise loving the sounds of a wild storm from the inside of our home for the night.
Woot Hoot!! We are in Pennsylvania!! Next week at this time, we will be asleep in our beds at home!

Jack got back about midnight! He slept in a bit, so I started today's ride with John. Jack met up with us for lunch, and we continued East.

Ha Ha! Sleeping In!

Pedaled in three states today!! Left Ohio, crossed the Ohio River, rode just a short distance in West Virginia, and then pedaled into our home state!! Yikes! West Virginia is hilly!

Rode extra cautious after taking a fall yesterday. Today's roads were not great -- lots of debris and rough surfaces. It was a slow go and after reaching Pennsylvania, and we decided to have John drive us and our bikes to a hotel for the evening. So we drove through the congested area of Pittsburgh and now have just a few miles to reach the Great Allegheny Passage in the morning! Can't Wait!

Jack's apartment in Wisconsin fell through! Oh UGH! He took the car and headed back West to again apartment shop! John biked with me continuing East. I assured Jack that my miles count for him also!

Both John and I had a minor accident! Railroad tracks grabbed our bike tires and first he went down and then me! Couldn't believe it! Lucky - bruised and scraped but nothing broken on us or our bikes. My front brakes came apart and we needed pliers to secure them again -- We so wanted to bike without carrying a lot of stuff that both our tool bag and our first aid kit were in the car with Jack!!

A local cyclist road with us for the last 10 miles or so today. So great for someone who knows the roads to lead the way. He invited us to his home for cold drinks and watermelon! Folks who ride bikes have got to be the friendliest people in the world!!

Can't wait for Jack to rejoin us! Wait till he sees our boo-boos!!!
Fun day! Got soaked! We were only on the bike for 1/2 a day!

While taking a brief stop during our ride, an older man (grandpa type :) asked us about our trip. He offered a ride, wanted to give us some maps, and asked if we needed any lunch money -- so very cute!!

John joined us again for a few days! As our "support" vehicle found us, we hurriedly took off our bike bags and just loved pedaling without the extra 40 pounds! The three of us then road the roller coasters at Cedar Point Amusement Park!! After descending the Rockies, the Millennium Force was a piece of cake!!!
Welcome to Ohio!!! The states are going so fast now! Gorgeous blue sky and perfect biking conditions today. Western Ohio was flatter than South Dakota! So peaceful! Our country road had no traffic, was smooth, and few cross roads! The route made for our fastest average MPH of our trip -- over 15 MPH!

The landscape added some gentle rolling hills and was a welcome change to the flatness of yesterday's ride! I love trying to see how far the downhill momentum can carry me up the next hill!

Our destination was Monroeville, Indiana near the Ohio boarder. I had read that Monroeville was the "Most Bike Friendly Town" in America! I needed to see for myself! As we entered the town, someone asked us if we were looking for the biker's shelter! Another green pickup truck stopped us and 'Barbara' told us that two family reunions were using the park's facilities, so the pavilion was open and to feel free to make ourselves at home!! She continued telling us that we could use the kitchen, shower, TV, and washer and dryer!! Crazy! We had no idea what to expect but this was way more than we could have imagined!
Wasn't loving today's ride along Route 30. I had forgotten about traffic in the East. Traffic was heavy and loud. The road's shoulder was littered with garbage. I told Jack that I thought we should have stayed north and ventured through Michigan.

But even along the busy highway, we saw a deer run through the cornfield. Above the sun's rays glittered through the shades of blue sky - Despite the traffic, it was a beautiful day! We saw a windmill headed for delivery. First, a wide load led by a police escort carried part of the base. About an hour later, a second police escort carried another part of the base. We then saw several large trucks each carrying a single blade. I never realized how huge each windmill is!

One of Warsaw's beautiful lakes

Then as we completed the day's ride we knew that we were exactly where we were meant to be! Entering Warsaw, Indiana we headed for the library. Just as we got there a young boy approached us and asked about our trip. He asked if we needed a place to spend the night and offered his home! Then a second man, Dick, joined the conversation and also invited us for the night. He offered his home for showers, laundry, beds, and then said he would take us out for dinner! The younger boy said he couldn't compete and that we should take Dick's offer :-) Just amazing!
The evening spent with Nancy, Dick and their son, Zach felt like an evening with old friends! Dick had biked across the US years ago, and it was fun comparing notes. He also had ridden the Great Allegheny Passage which we will be on as we make our way through Pennsylvania. We are again overwhelmed by their kindness!
Miles: 67 MPH: 12 Max: 20 Total: 2525
Can't believe we just pedaled right into the "Windy City!" In downtown Chicago for the night -- staying with our new friends, "Big" John and Kathy!

Paul, a friend of John's from IBM met us as we crossed into Illinois today. The miles flew by as we talked and learned about North Chicago from him. Saw amazingly beautiful neighborhoods of the rich and famous in northern Chicago! Paul connected us with his biking friend, John who lives in down town Chicago. John and his wife Kathy invited us for an awesome dinner and to spend the evening! Such blessings each day!! Tomorrow John will lead us out of Chicago and into Indiana!
Day off to apartment shop!

So glad not to be on the bike today. The temperature was 103!

I need a day off from our day off!! Looked at 10 apartments, condos, houses! Wow! So many great choices -- lake views, swimming pools, club houses, hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, even one with its own movie theater and putting green!!
Jack decided on city living - down town Racine - just two blocks from the lake! The apartment is beautiful, above one of the downtown stores, and it is HUGE! I know where we can all go for Thanksgiving!!! He's happy -- I'm happy!!
Heat Wave! Another day of record breaking temperatures. City pools staying open late, electric companies providing extra energy for cooling even if you cannot pay, fire hydrants spraying water, community air conditioned rooms opening for those who need it AND we are bicycling across the state! Oh boy it was hot! Wisconsin has many bike trails - very cool! The trails offered some shade, but the day started hot and just got hotter. Our only goal today was to get to our destination. We pedaled toward Milwaukee, and then onto Racine.
Again, strangers blessed us with kindness. A woman yelled from her driveway, asking us if we needed a cold drink. Later in the afternoon, we stopped in a neighborhood bar for something cold and the owner would not take any money for our drinks. She said anyone crazy enough to be outside on a day this hot deserves a free drink!

A new first today -- I got the "middle finger" salute! haha! We pedaled down the Pacific coast, through the National Forest, across the Rockies, through the wild west, across the Great Plains, across the river bluffs, through the rolling farm land and finally here in the heartland of the mid-west it happened -- a few harsh words and the "finger!!" Well, just another sign that we are closer to home :-)

We are 87% to our goal to raise $5,000 for the Special Olympics. Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you! As of today, friends, family, and our community have donated $4,250 to Lancaster County Special Olympics! Wow! Just incredible! Getting anxious now to complete our trip so we can thank each one of you personally.

A day off the bike tomorrow! Jack is apartment shopping here in Racine!
Jim and Karen's Beautiful Country Home, Loganville, Wisconsin
Miles: 84 MPH: 13.5 Max: 41 Total: 2292

Our lives continue to be blessed with new friends along our path. Yesterday, I sent an email to the Pastor at Grace Reformed Church in Reedsburg, Wisconsin asking if we could sleep in the Church's basement! Pastor Christian called and graciously offered his camper. Amazing!! (He also said that my email wins for creativity - I'm not really sure that was a compliment :-)

No longer can I keep up with Jack. He pushes me, but my legs can't pedal any faster! Today took us on a rode through beautiful Wisconsin farmland -- so much like home -- even complete with several Amish buggies! Some big hills (near the Mississippi the hills are called bluffs!) and even switch backs leading up to Wild Cat Mountain. Who knew that Wisconsin had mountains?

New Friends in Reedsburg!

Arriving in Reedsburg we met Pastor Christian and Kelly's beautiful family -- 5 young, adorable children. Pastor Christian then told us that members of his Church offered us their guest house! Jim and Karen welcomed us as friends. It was an amazing gift to spend the night in their guest apartment, a converted barn that is a peaceful and beautiful retreat overlooking their pond and farmland. Karen invited us for an incredible dinner. Kindness and generosity continues to shower down on us. God is so good!

Jack is a great navigator. Every night he studies the map. If he tells me the route is 65 miles, I know that as my odometer turns to 65, we'll be turning into our stop for the day. Today was the first day we had route problems. There are so many gravel roads in Minnesota and we also found out, "No more riding the interstates!!" haha! I guess we are not in the Wild West any more! Delays plagued us all day! In the morning, a "quick" stop at McDonalds for a cup of coffee took almost an hour! "Help" forgot to show for work! Then "The Diner" in Grand Meadows was packed as we stopped to grab lunch. Bob and Betty told us, "You can sit here (at their table)." An enjoyable lunch but much longer than anticipated.

Gravel roads popped up everywhere. We looked and looked for The Root River bike trail to finish our day's journey. Finally, looking above, we saw the overhead bridge - it was our trail! To get to it meant, trespassing, climbing a fence, and sneaking through a small opening in another barbed wire fence -- all with our bikes and gear! The trail was paved -- crazy state -- paved bike trail and gravel roads -- gotta love it!! Finally, arriving at the "Old Barn" - a hostile, we were ready for some ice water and a comfortable chair! Our joy at finishing a tough day was delayed when we were told that no "bunks" were available -- they were full!!

No internet and cell service added to more delays. The only recommendation was a motel 6 miles away -- 6 miles West -- we were not back tracking! When we asked about continuing East, a woman looked at me in my dirty sweaty clothes and helmet hair that is long past due for a cut and told me that the next town was Lanesboro--one of the top 3 tourist destinations in the WORLD. She then told me with her perfectly manicured nails and toes that if I was LUCKY to find something available that it would be at least $200 - $250. She said we really should turn back West and that Lanesboro was not for us!! haha I know I look like a hobo but what happened to "Minnesota nice?"

Planning to have a kitchen at the hostile, we had picked up chips, cheese, and olives to make nachos. Hungry and exhausted in our tiny room in Lanesboro, Jack and I discussed what we could do for dinner since we didn't even have a microwave oven and most shops were closed for the day. I told him we could still have nachos. He asked how without an oven......Easy......we just pretend I told him as I spread chips and cheese on a paper bag on the bed!

Thought we were all alone in the Church last night, when I ran into Bret in the kitchen! He is cycling from Chicago to the West and up to Canada! He too stopped at the bike shop and they set him up to sleep at the Church! Crazy!

About 30 miles into our ride, we passed a "Road Closed" sign! Not having a better plan, we ignored it! When we reached the barricades, we flagged down a car who volunteered to drive on through and come back to let us know if a bike could get through the construction! We got through!

Stopping for ice-cream, sixty miles into our ride, we see Jen again! She was in Albert Lea to visit her grandmother and recognized our bikes! What are the chances that she would drive by just as we stopped?

Greener farmland and rolling hills are now filling a landscape that is reminding us of home. We have left America's Great Plains.
Beautiful bike day......Just a few days ago I had asked Jack if he thought we would ever have an "uneventful" day. The miles passed quickly and other than our lunch stop (roadside) we didn't make any other stops, and I hadn't taken a single photo before we arrived in Fairmont! haha! I was sort of happy for the "boring" type of day.
As we neared Fairmont, MN a motorcycle stopped and told Jack that his Uncle owned the local bike shop. He told him to stop in whether or not he needed anything. I found Jack sitting outside the shop on the Lake, drinking a cold bottled water, talking to Jen and Larry. Larry handed me a cold water and some shipping boxes. He told me that I was going to break a spoke if I didn't send some of our stuff home. Jen made a phone call to her church and here we are staying in the beautiful youth room at Grace Lutheran Church for the evening. Pastor Steve was so kind and generous and gladly opened the church to us! We are sleeping in the Church's youth room on comfy couches! Wow! Wow! Wow!! I just continue to be amazed at all the kindness and generosity along the road! Jen gave us a grand tour of Fairmont. Larry's band is playing in the park tonight, so we hopefully can go and hear him!
unpacking, switching our new bags from bike to bike. A quick detour to see the falls before leaving town and finally, we were on the road East.

Entered Minnesota -- only a small sign -- no band or welcome
committee!! Oh well, perhaps Wisconsin will have a band to welcome us
:-)

Mixed feelings as we said Good-bye to the Wild West! We are glad to be
getting closer to home but the West is a special place so glad we got to
experience it from the seat of our bikes!

A much greener landscape with lots of corn and soy beans filling the
fields. Windmills also dotted the rolling hills. Jack mapped our
route--due EAST.. I had us wondering up, down, up, down!!! It's the engineer in him--straight line! Actually it
was a beautiful route--light traffic, smooth surface, rolling hills,
through small towns, no turns, ---just perfect for
the bike! Just love the small towns and stops in the coffee shops!!
Many signs that we are further East. We saw more police cars than we
saw in our entire first half of the trip - at least 3 people were
getting speeding tickets! More signs of the East -- saw a taxi, saw a country club,
folks honked at us to move out of the way, and we didn't feel safe
running into WalMart and leaving our bikes with all our stuff!!
Super 8, Sioux Fall, SD
Miles: 82 MPH: 12 Max: 23 Total:

Rain overnight! Soggy start as we had hung towels and shorts out to dry overnight!

Pushed hard for 82 miles to get to Sioux Falls before the bike store closed. Yes, they had the correct tire for the trailer. But, we told Kyle at Spoke-n-Sport Bikes that what we really would like is to ship the trailer home. He said he could help do that! WooHoo!! So we are sporting new panniers for Jack's bike and are minus our trailer and tent and sleeping pads! Tonight we are living big at the Sioux Fall's Super 8 -- hair dryer, air conditioner, in room shower (what has happened to me!)
