"The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is it's engine." - John Howard

Friday, June 8, 2012 (Day 2)
Edgefield McMenamins, Troutdale, OR
Miles:  35  MPH:  10.02  Max:  31  Total:  52
Great day! Woke up dry in a nice bed and had coffee brewing at 5am. Today we packed up and loaded the bikes in less than an hour--more than a 400% improvement over Tuesday when it took us almost 4 hours to get our soak and wet gear cleaned up and loaded on the bikes! We're getting better!

Hawthorne Bridge
Heading for downtown Portland , we road a service road adjacent to 8 lanes of highway traffic.  Then stopping to read directions, we saw a car stop in the middle of very busy traffic calling our names. It was Val, my cousin Bob's wife! What are the chances that she would drive by just as we stopped? :-)

Edgefield Hotel
We needed all our GEARS to climb over the west hills. Surly the steepest hills I've ever biked! I suppose it is just getting us ready for what's to come! Our adrenaline rushed as we had to ride Highway 26 (4 lanes of high speed traffic in each direction through a tunnel).  It was down hill and our odometer registered 30.3 MPH! It was like we had a motor on our bikes!

Once downtown Portland we crossed the Hawthorne Bridge and then road the Springwater Corridor bike trail -- no traffic!  Although rainy, we still enjoyed the ride.

Whimsical murals cover the walls at Edgefield
Hot Tub!

Today was a short riding day and we easily reached our destination-the historic Edgefield Hotel in Troutdale-a totally cool place. The hotel, built in 1911, once was the county poor farm. There are acres of gardens, 2 golf courses, several restaurants, live music, a concert stage boasting big names such as Bob Dillon and the Grateful Dead, a winery, brewery, distillery, and movie theater. Each room has hand painted murals and art work was displaced everywhere! We soaked in the mineral springs hot tub before saying good night.
Still raining here but hoping tomorrow will be dry as we head for the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. We start biking longer days and on Monday we have a nearly 100 mile day planned---praying for a tail wind!

Thursday, June 7, 2012 (Day 1)
Comfort Inn, Beaverton, OR
Miles:  17   MPH:  12  Max:  29

OMG!  Whose idea was this trip!!!  It was a torrential down pour and gusty winds all night.  We woke up in the middle of a swamp!!  After a few tears, we got a hold of ourselves and made a plan.  We ran with all our gear (took 5 trips!) up to a covered pavilion!  There we tried to dry off and pack things up.  We checked the weather and it looked like the rain wasn't going to quit for days!  We thought about staying put at the campground but decided to at least bike to the town of Tillamook!

Tire dip in the Pacific!
Dipped our rear tire in the Pacific and we took off in the pouring rain.  Pedaled up some hills of the Oregon Coastal Range as we headed along the Wilson River Highway.

Once in Tillamook, we met several homeless folks who thought we were homeless!  Bill gave us advice on how to find free hot showers and free meals!!  Jack bought him and his friend coffee and made a friend for life :-)  Bill has lived in a tent for 2 years now......he forgot to shut his flap last night, so he woke up in a pool of water.....Felt like a wimp after talking to him!!

Deciding that we needed a hotel we set off for a Comfort Inn. Loaded our bikes on the Tillamook bus!  UGH!  First day and we are on a bus!  Very skimpy bike day, so we are already planning how to take a short cut to catch up :-)

The Comfort Inn is heavenly............. a looooooong hot shower, hair dryer, bed equipped with several pillows, laundry to dry all our wet things........we are so happy!!

Dinner at the Black Bear Diner

Looks like we'll be riding in the rain again tomorrow, but at least we'll start off dry.  We'll be heading through Portland on a bike trail!

Almost 11:00pm and I still need to make some updates to our rain covers for our bike bags!

Love and miss you all at home!! xoxoxoxoxox

Cape Lookout State Park, Oregon

Yippi! We made it to the Pacific Ocean! We are camping at Cape Lookout State Park, a beautiful spot with an ocean view in a dense forest--absolutely beautiful!
"Stuff" arriving at Portland train station.

Beach Homes
Pacific Ocean from our campsite
Another view from our campsite
Got our things unpacked (not a small feat )! Tent set up twice (Jack wanted to move it), made dinner on an open camp fire, took showers for the first time since leaving home...Oh life is good!!

Our Castle!
Cooking dinner!
Backing up... our morning began with the sun rising over the Columbia River.....when we arrived in Portland my cousin (we decided we are second cousins) Bob and his wife Val picked us up. We hadn't seen each other since we were kids - at least 40 years ago!  Just another bonus to our trip! We had a delightful lunch together and ride to the beach.  We're hoping they can us to bike on Saturday when we ride along the Columbia River Gorge.

Jack is already asleep in the tent, and now it started to rain!! Oh well it is Portland and that's what it does here!!  I am soooooo ready to start pedaling in the morning.......Hoping that I can sleep :-)
Yep missing home! xoxox

Traveling West All Aboard!

Woke to a fiery orange sun rising over the empty flat land of North Dakota.  Just awesome!

Just loving the train!  Getting coffee in the snack car is a step back in time...friendly service , no automation, and hospitality that we don't see much anymore! Also love the party car- walls of glass for sight seeing, folks playing cards and games at tables, and people making new friends. It's crowded, loud, comfortable, and a bit crazy!  Today they had park rangers on-board with animal pelts and other local artifacts.

We followed along 150 miles of the Missouri River and saw Fort Union at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers.  This is where Lewis and Clark built a fur trading post.

The day gets long.....no exercise.....and we keep gaining hours!!!

Such diverse folks riding the train.  Many are friendly and conversations help pass the time!

Anxious to start pedaling!!!  Missing everyone at home!  xo

Transferring Trains in Chicago

Breakfast in Chicago
We made it to Chicago. With several hours till our next train we were able to see the sights.  Ate at Lou Michel's. They serve home made donut holes and milk duds while you wait. Jack ordered Bacon and eggs, hash brown, toast, pancakes, and French toast. They then give you complimentary homemade ice cream! Ha! We haven even exercised yet. I may need to send him home early, because I can't afford to feed him!
Millennium Park, Chicago

Chicago River
Chaos is the only way to describe the train station in Chicago! But back on-board we again were loving the view. Riding on Amtrak Empire Builder we sipping coffee under an orange streaked sky as we crossed the Mississippi.  We watched as the sun was setting. Doesn't get much better!
Sun set on the Mississippi
Met a group of boys in the observation car (I Call it the party car) who are headed to Washington state and will then bike the coast to LA.   I felt like a kid talking to them as they asked me things like, "Do I like to rock climb or rock repel or mountain bike!"

Love being with Jack! He's calm when I'm not, finds everything I misplace, and takes care of many of our trip's details!  Again way too excited to sleep!!!!

"A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." Lao Tzu

June 3 - Train enroute to Chicago

ChooChoo we're off on the train!

Had a send off fit for a king and queen! My Dad, neighbor Bonnie, BFF and her husband Curvin, Lynn and Bob from Special Olympics, kitty-Flip, and my husband John all there to wish us well!

Getting to Washington D.C. was surprisingly easy. Our biggest problem was the box we had containing our cart. The red cap told us again and again that it was way too big. We told him we measured it, but he said he had worked at the train station a lot of years and it was too large! So a bit of stress! Several very nice baggage check clerks discussed our box - mostly thinking that it would get stuck as it made it's way on the conveyor belt through a hole in the wall and around a sharp turn. Eventually they let it go and as it went through the hole it scraped the wall but did clear it!  Hey we did measure! After that we bought our bike boxes and received  lots of help so we were set.

Washington D.C.'s train station is beautiful!
Lunch at DC train station
The train reminds  me of a much simpler time. Compared it to flying...you get to keep your shoes on when you board, virtually no security checks, and you can carry on any size liquid containers...actually you can take almost anything with you on-board!

As far as the rules once on the train.......................................
"There are a few rules"  the conductor told us once we were seated. He said "I'm gonna tell you the rules and then repeat them, so don't tell me later that you didn't know. If  you don't agree with anything I tell you then get your butt out of your seat and take the bus!!"  haha!  Then after each "no no" - no smoking, no loud music, no drunkenness - he would repeat "if you don't like it then sit your butt on Grey Hound!"

America is really beautiful from the window of the train!  Riding the Capitol Limited from Washington to Chicago we went through the beautiful Allegheny mountains and  saw deer and cows, passed through Harper's Ferry, and then passed Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.

Amanda and her Mom - my new friends!
I made a new friend enroute to Chicago. Seven year old Amanda along with her parents was moving from Florida to Chicago. No car and everything they owned was on-board as checked luggage! She couldn't wait to see snow and jump in a pile of leaves for the  first time in her life! She told me she loves the outdoors,  climbing trees, and catching lizards! She also thought my black bottom cupcakes were the best thing she ever tasted! No wonder she stole my heart. With a big hug we said goodbye!

Way too excited to get any sleep!

They're Off!!!
